Answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) describe optimizing content so that AI systems — Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, and similar tools — can find, understand and cite it accurately. The practical steps are largely the same disciplines search engines have long recommended: clear direct answers, structured data, crawlable pages, and demonstrable expertise. No one, including Google, can guarantee or reliably measure inclusion in AI-generated answers today.
What AEO and GEO actually mean
Neither term has an official standard body definition, and Google does not use the phrases "AEO" or "GEO" in its own documentation. Google instead publishes guidance on "AI features and your website," stating plainly that the same fundamentals used for classic Search apply, and that "there's no way to specifically 'optimize' for inclusion in AI Overviews or AI Mode" beyond good Search practice 1. That single sentence is the most important fact in this whole topic: treat any tactic sold specifically as an "AEO hack" or "GEO trick" with scepticism unless it is really just solid technical and content practice by another name.
Direct answers and question-shaped structure
AI systems that summarise or answer a query tend to pull short, self-contained passages. Structuring a page so a direct answer sits near the top — before caveats, background, or a long introduction — makes that passage easier to lift cleanly, and it also serves human readers who skim. Pairing this with question-shaped subheadings (matching how people actually phrase queries) gives both search engines and AI systems clearly scoped text to extract.
Practical structure checklist
- [ ] State the direct answer in the first 2–3 sentences under the H1 or the relevant H2/H3
- [ ] Use question-phrased `##`/`###` headings for the sub-questions you actually answer
- [ ] Keep each answer self-contained — understandable without reading the rest of the page
- [ ] Support claims with a linked primary source, not just an internal assertion
- [ ] Avoid burying the answer behind marketing copy, sliders, or long preambles
Structured data: telling machines what the page is
Structured data does not guarantee inclusion anywhere, but it removes ambiguity about what a page is, who wrote it, and what entity it describes. Google's own documentation frames structured data as a way to give "explicit clues about the meaning of a page" 2, and its general guidelines set out the rules markup must follow to be eligible for any rich-result treatment 3.
The relevant vocabulary itself comes from schema.org, the shared standard search engines and other consumers of structured data draw on:
- **Organization** — describes the agency as an entity: legal name, logo, sameAs links to verified profiles, contact details.
- **LocalBusiness** — extends Organization with address, opening hours, and service area, useful for agencies with a physical or regional presence.
- **Article** — marks up blog posts and guides with author, publish date, and headline.
- **FAQPage** — marks up genuine question-and-answer content; schema.org documents its expected properties directly 4.

Crawlability for AI crawlers
If an AI crawler cannot fetch your pages, none of the above matters to that system. Google's AI features use the existing Googlebot infrastructure, so standard Search crawlability applies. Separately, OpenAI publishes its own crawler documentation covering GPTBot (used for model training) and OAI-SearchBot (used for ChatGPT search features), and explains that robots.txt directives for each are independent — you can allow one and disallow the other 5. Crawlability checklist
- [ ] Confirm robots.txt does not block Googlebot, Bingbot, or the AI crawlers you want to allow
- [ ] Decide deliberately whether to allow GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot, rather than by default or accident
- [ ] Keep key pages free of client-side rendering that hides content from crawlers without JavaScript execution
- [ ] Avoid noindex on pages you want cited or summarised
First-party evidence and author/expertise signals
AI-generated answers, like Google's ranking systems generally, favour content that demonstrates real experience and expertise rather than repackaged summary. Publishing first-party evidence — original data, named case studies, methodology pages — gives any system, human or automated, something concrete to cite instead of a generic claim. Attaching a real author with a visible bio, and linking that author consistently across pages (supported by Article and Organization/Person structured data), reinforces the same expertise signal Google's broader Search guidance has long emphasised for helpful content.
Consistent entity data across the web
The same NAP and entity-consistency logic that applies to directory listings applies here: your business name, address, services, and key facts should read the same on your site, your Google Business Profile, and any structured data you publish. Google's guidelines for representing a business on Google Business Profile are one concrete, checkable standard for this consistency 1.
What cannot be guaranteed or measured
There is currently no reliable, public method to measure whether or how often a specific page is used inside an AI Overview, an AI Mode answer, or a ChatGPT response, and no service can guarantee inclusion. Google states this directly: there is no separate optimization path for AI features beyond established Search practice 1. Any tool claiming to measure "AEO score" or "share of AI answers" with precision is using a third-party proxy, not a disclosed metric from the AI systems themselves. Report these limitations to clients plainly rather than presenting estimated visibility as fact.
Putting it together
None of this requires new tactics invented for AI systems specifically. It requires doing the fundamentals well: answer the question a visitor actually has, mark the page up so machines understand what it is, make sure crawlers you want to allow are actually allowed, and back claims with checkable, first-party evidence. Where AI visibility is unmeasurable, say so — to clients and in your own reporting.
